The Black Box! A Successful Opening... The Weekend of November 18, 19, and 20th 1999 The Black Box proved its worth. The play -
"Live From the Edge of Oblivion" performed by the Wythe Drama Team, proved the worth and met the goals for which the performance space was intended . To a diverse audience of appreciative spectators, the team delivered strong and comical performances - proving to be the kind of 'Alternative' and 'Experimental' theatre the space accomodates. I attended Friday night's performance (also attended by more than fifty persons--almost a full house). I was thrilled to see our students breaking in a whole new concept within Richmond Public Schools. Mr. Derome Smith, Drama Director at Wythe, assures me that this tradition will grow, and that The Black Box will be a community drama spot that will welcome all sorts of small theatre endeavors by High School actors. The producing of original works by student, local, and regional playwrights, theatre-in-the-round, dinner-theatre, small-ensemble productions (dramatic and musical) will be the primary focus of the space. If anyone out there wants information on The Black Box, please contact Mr. Derome Smith, GWHSOTA, 804-780-5037 We will be back soon in this very spot, to inform you of upcoming shows. -Richard Martin, Fine Arts Department Chair |
